USGS Great Lakes Science Center: Complete Renovation of Process Water System

Ann Arbor, Michigan

The Great Lakes Science Center exists to meet the nation’s need for scientific information for restoring, enhancing, managing, and protecting living resources and their habitats in the Great Lakes basin ecosystem. Aqua Logic was sub-contracted to build a large number of customized self-contained filtration systems for marine research at the science center intended to explore the connectivity between the lakes, and between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystem processes in that dynamic environment.

Components & Features

  • Built ten (10) custom LSS skids that made up a network of systems.
  • Each skid contained; powder coated stainless steel frame, sand filter, sump, small UV sterilizer, large UV sterilizer, plate heat exchanger, recirculation pump, and two filtration pumps.
  • Included filtration loop, return loop through second UV and bio-tower, and temperature control circuit using building’s cold water supply loop.
  • Built four (4) custom rack system with various tank sizes and configurations, and complete LSS
  • Each rack system contained; powder coated stainless steel rack, insulated ABS tanks, recirculation pump, filtration sump, UV sterilizer, and plate heat exchanger.
  • Built two (2) self-contained ‘McDonald Hatching Jar’ systems that included powder coated stainless steel rack, ‘McDonald’ brand jars, insulated ABS tanks with double sided acrylic windows, filtration sump, recirculation pump, UV sterilizer, and plate heat exchanger
  • Built two (2) racks for ‘Marisource’ brand egg-hatching trays which included; powder coated stainless steel rack, isolation panels, recirculation pump, filtration sump, UV sterilizer, and plate heat exchanger.
